This spring, the Dallas Young Cellist Project held its inaugural UIL preparation workshop, and the results were extraordinary.
A Room Full of Rising Stars
Twelve students gathered on a Saturday morning, each preparing for their first formal cello competition. Many had been playing for less than a year. Our volunteer instructors — a mix of Dallas Symphony musicians and high school seniors — led the group through four intensive hours of focused practice.
The curriculum covered:
- Audition repertoire — breaking down each piece phrase by phrase
- Sight-reading technique — building confidence with unfamiliar music
- Mock audition runs — performing in front of peers to simulate the real experience
- Performance mindset — managing nerves and staying present on stage
The Results
Of the twelve students who participated, nine went on to perform in their school's UIL competition — a remarkable achievement for a group with limited prior experience. Three students earned superior ratings, and one, 13-year-old Maria, placed in the top five of her division.
"I never thought I could do something like this," Maria told us afterward. "DYCP gave me the cello, the lessons, and the workshop. I didn't have to worry about anything except playing my best."
What's Next
Inspired by this success, we are planning two additional workshops before the fall semester begins, including a first-ever all-region audition prep clinic. We're also expanding our loaner instrument program to accommodate ten new students.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of our donors and volunteers. Thank you for believing in these young musicians.
